Well having finished my other group build entry the P-40 it was time to crack on with building a display base for the Spitfire.

It's the first time I have tried to build a base like this, main components will be a cheap photo frame, some regular decorating filler, various paints and some scatter sand.

20191213_131151.jpg  cheapish filler from a discount shop.

Firstly I removed the stand from the back of the picture frame before covering the photo frame glass with a thin layer of filler.
I thought that leaving the glass would prevent any potential warping that might occur if I replaced the glass with wood.

I smoothed out the filler with a spatula into a semi flat desert type landscape but before it was completely dry I covered it with cling film and used the Spitfire to run a few shallow wheel ruts across it.
It was then put on one side to dry completely.

After a few days of drying I gave it a coat of Black Stynlrez primer.

I will leave this to dry over the weekend before adding some sandy, buff colour paint and sand.

Another update soon.

Thanks for looking [thumb]

Geoff.

Great beginning to a base. I actually never thought of cling wrap on a wet surface and rolling a model vehicle on it! Nice tip!!

Cheers Ted [thumb]

Well I've finished the base this morning so will be able to post some pics of the build in the final reveal section later.

Here's how the base was completed

After the primer was dry I gave the plaster part of the base a coat of Tamiya XF-52 Dark Earth highlighted with XF-59 Desert Yellow.
Once dry this was masked off and the frame was given a couple of coats of XF-55 Deck Tan.

Once all the paint had dried completely it was ready for the next stage.

I have been looking at pictures of Spitfires in the desert during WW2 and was surprised that there was often stubby type vegetation so I wanted to try and recreate this.

I decided to use these materials.

The tufts are self adhesive so I popped these into place in an area of less wear as I thought nothing much would be growing where there was heavy use.

A couple needed some extra pva glue to help them stick and once they were all in place it was on with the sand.
I brushed watered down PVA glue onto the base and sprinkled the sand and stone mixture onto it. Once dry the excess was tipped off and it was all done [biggrin]

I'm quite pleased with it and it certainly helps to set the model off I think.

Final reveal later, thanks for looking [thumb]
