F.2A:s decaling continues. Next thing to decal is starboard fuselage.

There is quite a few stencils and best way to get all into place in my opinion is work your way from one end to another and cross over the number from instructions as you progress.

[Decaling_starboard_text-800]
It takes time to compare decals to each other and to references but plane is going to look a lot more like the real thing.. I used decals from both sheets (most of them came from Xtradecal -sheet).

Missiles diameter is the same in Firestreak (old) and Redtop (new) missiles. Therefore I decided that I could use clear seeker heads from new mold in old molds missiles.
[Missiles_cut-800]
Therefore I had to cut missiles head off.
[Missiles_drill-800]
I drilled both ends open so that it would accept seaker head and rocket motor would have exhaust shown.

great idea with the decals and looking great so far. I really like ordinance with clear of colored glass tips. makes for a very nice added detail.
OH my, you got me on tip toes....I just knew that there would be one more picture with the tip installed!! anticipation!! LOL
BTW--nice photos! well done.

Thanks all for your comments! Missiles seems to get some interest, so I'll reveal that I have some 'bigger plans' for these missiles that belongs to F.3 (old). But if that will materialize depends if I have enough time to do and if I do have time have I ability to do it...

   [Missiles_painted_masked_text-800]
I decided to put clear part into place until I have painted the missile. Missile was first painted in black (Alclad), then two 4mm tapes was used to mask stripes. White (Alclad) was used next. Then forward part was painted Tamiya Yellow Green ZF-4...

Decaling F.2A (new) continues..

[Decaling_board_text-800]
The biggest problem using these two different sets of decals seems to be yellow colored markings which are somewhat different depending on manufacturer. On Cartograph (supplied with kit) yellow seems to be more orange and more vibrant, but Xtradecal decals seems more natural. There was a 'problem' with this as Airfix had decided that national insignia and some stencils are printed over each other. This would be ok solution if I had used all yellow texts from supplied sheet. But as I used all the yellow texts from Xrtadecal sheet Cartocaph texts seemed little strange. I cut the part of the text that wasn't on top of the insignia (as it was already in place..) and used Xtradecal in there, doing so I minimized Cartograph (Airfix) text amount. I intend to weather this and I hope it would diminish color difference... Texts also seems to be smaller in Xtradecal sheet and little less readable, which is perhaps more right in this scale? Hope this time the circles can be seen more easily to mark which manufacturers decal is used...

Last side to decal is obviously the top.

[Decaling_top_reference-800]
Walkway lines were from Xtradecal sheet as they seems to be better quality and do not need so much care to blend in as tested with bottom stripes. One thing that bothered me after I had applied those was that they were shorter than showed in instructions, fortunately there was picture in my reference book that I suppose confirms that this is right too.. There is not much decals compared to bottom/sides.

F.3 (old) still needs some attention:

[Spine_paint_error_left-800]
Red in spine border is not totally strait.

[Spine_paint_error_right-800]
Red spine isn't totally strait and mask has been loose on one point and border is too far up, not the hole spine is painted...  And there has happened something to metal finish (+some roughness but my cropping program seems to do very badly on dull metal finish too..) as I painted red but I couldn't get picture of it, it is so fine. It could be Alclad white primer or Tamiya red that could have gone through my papertape masking. I haven't noticed this kind of behavior before..

[Spine_paint_error_correction-800]
I had to correct these, first the spine..

And next thing to correct is metal finish.

[Masking_final_left-800]
[Masking_final_right-800]
Some corrections / changes are done after I watched the model for a while. Maskings for those.

[Painted_right-800]
[Painted_left_-800]  [Painted_bottom-800]
[Painted_top-800]
There must be quite big contrast between color differences when you do weathering which goes over all paints. Still I don't like that high contrast and I think that metal colors don't need too much weathering. Therefore I painted some Alclad polished aluminum over dull aluminum in stripes and splotches.

As F.2A (new) is nearing its completion I had to pay attention its landing gear:

[Landing_gear_doors_text-800]
Some attention must be payed to main landing gear doors. Two carvings and some riveting is done, otherwice they are quite good.

[River-R_vs_Trumpeter_text-800]
In gear doors I had good opportunity to test my new River-R mini riveting tool. As shown in picture this is much more open than Trumpeters tool.
[Rivetting_tools_top-800]
This is shown also in usage as you can see what you do and where the marks are going beforehand on the contrary to Trumpeters tool. I like this River-R tool and would use it some future projects too as it is much better than Trumpeters.

I looked back on my build and noticed that there is no underside picture form F.2A (new).. added it to right post...

srp71: Thanks! Main landing gear doors are quite visible so I thought it would be nice place to test my new Rivet-R tool.

One week to go.. It is time to start F.3 (old) decaling.

[Decals_all-800]
All decals that will be used (some duplicate..) from Xrtadecal and Modeldecal with painted and closscoated BAC Lightning F.3 (old)

[Decal_compare_text-800]
Some comparison between Airfix (by Cartogaph) and Modeldecal. On Modeldecal the colors seems to be darker and red is closer to Tamiya red which I used. Although white is a bit more to yellow.

[Decals_bottom-800]
Modeldecal decals conformed very well into panel lines with Microset/sol. I cut serial numbers the same way than in previously (in F.2A). In this version (F.3) there is not too many stripes compared to F.2A..

I totally agree with Pete o his remarks about the build. the rivet marks going around that odd shape in the center are especially well done. don't know how you followed that so carefully! well done. cannot WAIT to see both birds complected--its going to be great! best wishes as you finish.

Thanks for kind words!

Brundledonk: I wish I could be as confident as you that builds would be ready in time. This week is shorter than usual as there is 'Ascension Day' on Thursday. Maybe I have to cut some corners and not do all things I would like to do, let's see.

TedUSA: The small Rivet-R tool has quite small diameter and you really see where you are going to with that, but in upper edge tight corner I had to use needle to get rivets done.. perhaps in 1/48 you could have done it with tool also?

[Decals_board_side-800]
F.3 port side is decalled. Modeldecal decals has much less details than Xtradecal sheet. It is only shown on badge that is in red/white 'arrow' as I use Xtradecal sheet in all stencils. Modeldecal decals were a bit matte on surface, but I'm not too worried about this as there will be gloss cote over all these.

[Port_mistake_text-800]
There happened some mistake in clear coting and one big bump was created above port missile rail, here is some enlargement of it after I tried to sand it smooth. Some corrective maneuvers must be done...

[Landing_gear_things_painted-800]
F.2A (new) landing gear doors and legs are painted with Alclad Gold titanium + Alclad clear yellow as landing gear bay (to simulate some protective coating).. outside was painted with Alclad Aluminum. Big bum is bluetack to keep things upright.

I have to take some time off from something to get these done in time. So it is texts/show hows of these posts..

[Decalling_top-800]
F.3 (old) top is decalled (and starboard started). In this plane Xtradecal walk lines does go further down than in F.2A. This is perhaps due to fact that these aircraft had different style wings.

[Landing_gear_parts-800]
All F.2A (new) landing gear stuff is now painted and weathered there is two of everything so top and bottom is shown.. They still lacks decals.

Such a pity about the mishap. But in that photo your decals have set into the panel lines beautifully. Also nice work on the undercarriage.
