I just finished a kit that I had in my stash for 27 years.... the 1/72 AMT ERTL F-8E Crusader.  The kit quality was poor but it did continue to build my modeling skills with the need for significant rescribing of most panel lines and a large quantity of filler.  The canopy fit was also terrible.  I used the original kit decals with the exception of the stars on the rear stabilizer.  The original decals were very thick and were very stubborn.  I used a significant amount of Walthers Solvaset to get them to settle... in fact I hit them 22 separate times (twice a day for 11 days) and lots of cutting and stabbing to beat them into submission.

Some build details:

Kit:  1/72 AMT ERTL #8804, F-8E Crusader

Details:
- Scratch built cockpit although it is difficult to see.
- Wing flaps cut from solid plastic wing and lowered.

Paints:
- Testors MM Neutral Gray #1725 (Topside); Testors MM Insignia White #1745 (Underside);  Testors MM Guards Red # 2718 (Red trim).

Finish:
- Vallejo Matt Varnish (thinned 50-50 with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner)

Weathering:
- Black preshade
- Flory Dark Dirt
- Oil paint filters on some panels for subtle colour variations (Buff, Blue and White)
- Post shading done with thinned Tamiya Nato Black
- Tamiya weathering pastel - Smoke for cannon area
