1/72 Special Hobby Heinkel He-59 ‘Red Cross.’

Paints used:  Vallejo and Citadel for interior, Mr Hobby and Tamiya for exterior.

Weathering products: Ammo Mig pin wash.

Scratch built details include ropes and fuel tank access panels on the floats, 0.3 mm brass rod for rigging and EZ line for antenna.  Rivet details also added on metal sections of aircraft.

Markings are a mix of aftermarket decals from Microscale and Xtradecal, and airbrushed, using masks originally made by fellow member Wayne Hillman, then myself.

Build thread  http://genessis-models.websitetoolbox.com/post/172-special-hobby-heinkel59c-red-cross-10144813?&trail=15

This was a challenging build, though not because the kit was in any way a bad one.  On the contrary, this kit pushed me to develop new skills and talents, and step into areas I had not previously strayed into.  For instance, this was my first short run kit, with the usual and expected hurdles, such as a lack of locating pins and sockets.  I had never built a bi-plane before, with all the attending obstacles of struts and rigging to think about.  My first experience, too, with vac-formed canopies, and the first use of paint masks.  Despite all of this, it was, for the most part, an enjoyable build, at least up until the point where my father became poorly, and eventually, passed away.  As for the finished result, I can’t say I’m entirely happy with it.  The end result is, to me at least, somewhat messy, and, admittedly, at times I rushed it, or didn’t take enough care, but I hope I can be excused for thinking more about dad at times than the kit.  But, on the whole, it was a good learning curve, and though it has fingerprints, blobs of glue and fuzzy edges to some of the markings, for my first attempt at all of the above, it’s not too bad.

Finally, I would like to dedicate this build to my late father, Derek.  Dad was an ambulance driver all his working life, and though it would be impossible to guess how many calls he went on, it would be fair to say there are a good many people alive today who wouldn’t otherwise be so if it were not for him and his comrades.  So it seems appropriate to dedicate my ‘Rescue Me’ SIG entry to a man who himself rescued so many others.  Rest in peace, dad, I’m proud of you, and love and miss you.

An unusual and very intetesting model. And you did it perfectly well. I'm so impressed by your work. The painting, the weathering and the details are very realistic. Congratulations.
