I got to UNIT 7 later than usual and did not feel too well--tummy trouble? I mostly just sat there and looked at various parts and things in progress, thought about them, but did not actually get much done. Kind of a blah session.

centerline tank tips look ok.

the ECM pod I chose to use. Below are some examples of it mounted on Phantom F-4 birds. It will need several rounds of masking to get the paint done. I got this Pod out of a hasgawa weapons kit but not mounting pylon was available [I had already used it on another build. Earlier in this WIP thread I scratchbuilt a compatible pylon for the Pod  based on photos I gathered.

The canopy masks I ordered have been shipped and are supposed to be here by 07/31/15. Meanwhile, I still have to eliminate the gap between the windscreen and the fuselage [picture posted earlier].

Hey Ted it's looking good man! as far as the canopy is it the combing (sp?) that's keeping the canopy from sitting right? maybe some strategic sanding on the combing can make the canopy sit better? That's what I would do any way, you can always paint it up and weather it up a bit. Unless it's already glued ...then I'm not sure how you'd proceed.

Thanks Neil,

the canopy is just down with PVA glue. the problem is that if I bring the windscreen part of the canopy down, it fits perfectly around the combing and fuselage, but then there is a large gap between the windscreen and the first pilots canopy. I don't think there is any option but to build up the fuselage under the front of the windscreen? There was another Academy in the Phantom GB. I need to go check that WIP thread to see if they had a problem?

EDIT: I went through the Phantom GB and Kennymco built the Eduard kit which uses the academy kit as the basis. when he attached his canopy, there is a "Step-off" between the pilots canopy and the windscreen. I will have to pop the windscreen off and see if I can manage that position.

2nd EDIT: I spent a LOT of time online looking at Phantom Scale model builds and the real thing with attention in both cases to the canopy fits. I guess that 9/10 scale models have a step off as I described above. However, I did not find a single picture of the actual Phantom F-4 that has a step off like the scale models. Odd, very odd.

at least now I have hope that I can remedy that gap and be aligned with most scale models out there.

I'm actually building the same thing Ted and I didn't have this problem so I can't say what the problem is here's a few pics

It's not glued down yet but I should'n have any problems. Maybe you have gotten a bad canopy? not sure. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you Ted.

Neil, those pictures echo what I saw online last night.
There is a step off from the front canopy on top of the windscreen portion of the canopy. When I first dry fitted the canopy and the windscreen did not seem to "fit", I looked at pictures of the real Phantoms and there was not a step off. Apparently that is the normal position for that part on scale models. You solved my "problem! thanks!

BTW--you build looks nice from what I can see in the pictures. Pilots are great.

Coming along real nice Ted.

I'm glad you have got the canopy sorted out (sorry I was late replying to your PM) I can't think of an easy way to reduce that step, although I doubt that it will be visible once everything is painted, I don't remember noticing it on Kennys build so I'm pretty sure it will be fine

no worries Pete, Neil is also building the same kit and his pictures settled the question about how the canopy sits at the front. I sanded the combing down per his suggestion and it looks great now.

Short session at UNIT 7 today---it was the beginning of a "honey-do" weekend and the errands started today!

I unmasked the missiles to reveal the stripes and then settled the canopy puzzle--thanks to Neil.......THANKS NEIL! I was reluctant to sand the combing down but Neil's pictures and his suggestion made me feel confident about it. Its all good now.

One other tiny accomplishment. My clear piece had a tiny gap at one end--filled it in with CA glue.looks "better"-needs to be masked now.

Well Gentlemen, the GF is off every other weekend and this is her "off" weekend. I won't see UNIT 7 till Monday? I will be receiving the canopy masks any day now. after installing those, its time for some big paint.

I count on you guys to keep me informed and pumped up. I have very little support locally. My GF sometimes says, "Are you going to work on your toys today?" She has no idea what that sounds like.
The guys at the scale model club [meets once a month] rarely offer more than a grunt and a glance. Go figure.I like my international buds the best!

Thanks Neil!

I inched along today and did some touch-up paint on the missiles I had posted pics of earlier in the WIP thread that had some over spray and other paint corrections due.Next I sent quite a bit of time masking the ECM Pod for the stripes on the bottom portion of the Pod. after that there are some silver stripes up top, some markings, weathering, etc.almost forgot, I attached the front part of the canopy with PVA glue. My canopy masks came in the mail today, but I did not see them until I got home this PM. Pictures of the masks tomorrow and maybe I could apply them to the Phantom?

I had hoped to get the canopy masks on yesterday [its 0323 here, regional outtage of cell and internet services earlier--sorry]. Well, anyway, I got  pictures of them. They were 1/2 the cost of the Eduards masks and contain 2 sets of masks--interior and exterior. If you have a lot of canopy detail and canopy open, this is a bonus?

Of course I will let you know how they perform. I have never used pre-cut canopy masks before.

Hi Ted, very nice that you found your mojo back for this great plane :-). Very nice progress and as always amazing attention to detail and top notch threat, very interesting! I will start soon the F4 I got from Bobby... but have to admit that I'm a little intimidated by all the goodies that came with it 0.0

You will do fine. just remember, use only what YOU want to use and feel comfortable with. I ordered a LOAD of PE for a tank build--Sturmtiger, and never used several sprues of it--it got ridiculous and way too tiny to deal with [IMHO]. you won the prize, now use it as YOU will. No one expects someone to follow any particular guidelines to a build. It ALL belongs to you and you alone.
