Hope this gives you a clearer idea of what's needed (note the Phantom type).

Nice work on the gun pod Ted ! I think that the gun pod was only fitted to the centre pylon on naval phantoms due to the bulge of the nose cone (larger radar than the airforce variant) so it couldn't have a chin pod fitted, I'm not 100% sure but I remember reading something about it while researching the f-4j

thanks Pete. I'll look into that. referring to the bulge under the nosecone of the phantom? I think the academy kit has three choices? different variations B,C,D?

Okay, you guys finally got me straight. I got to figure out where 33 & 34 go and building the pylon--then I'm home free on the gun pod! THANKS!

I kept digging some more and saw that the gun pod in question is in the Hasegawa weapons set: C
I have set C but it was used and the weapons already basiclly assembled. I only have one of the 2 gun pods in the kit. Here are the Academy [white] and Hasegawa gun [green] pods next to each other.

Looking at the photos you have it looks like 33 & 34 fit into the holes on the pod. Item 39 is definately the pylon, again from your photos which shows the orientation. Now, from what I've seen that pylon should attach directly to the plane between the two extra air intakes.

Nigel--I giving it all a look. thank you very much.

backtracking a bit here are a couple of links to a modelers work with the gun pods--he has three on his F-4. the longer pod is in the center position and the shorter pods [no rear casing] are on wing pylons where they stay out of the way of the landing gear. just some nice work that he does. wish he had detailed the pylons?

It is all very interesting but I really failed to the research as I know I should have. I did not choose a variant and find out more about specific humps and bumps and this and that and the other. I was so relieved to be finished with the tank I just jumped into the Phantom kit based on a bunch of pictures and sources that I gathered but actually did not study. Now I have let my "fascination" with the gun pod kind of stall me out for a bit. I can't reconcile the parts in the academy kit except for the pylon. I think Nigel and Pete and you may have to come over and give me some hands on help!? Actually, there are plenty of stores and munitions for the plane without letting myself get locked up in the gun pod. Christian needs to send batman to give me another whack and straighten me out again! LOL.

Ted,

Andy is absolutely right.

I've learn't a lot about that weapon, decided I'm going to use it as it looks good, and have it sitting on a 3 wheeler tractor that wouldn't be able to take the weight anyway...but it looks good!

I'm even thinking of making mine into the VX-4 Black Bunny. That should look quite impressive on a carrier deck, and no pre, or post, shading to do. [crazy]

I agree with everyone else Ted, don't stress over the accuracy too much, we build these things for ourselves, and while I have the upmost respect for those who strive for 100% accuracy, I don't think it's the end all and be all of the hobby, and lean much more to the artistic side of things, just don't paint it polka dot lol ! By the way those weapon sets look great, you can really load up a fighter with that lot. And wishing your Mom a speedy recovery too buddy !

Guys, thanks! I mean that. I was sitting around with my Charlie Brown blockhead spinning around and suddenly it came to me--skip the gun pod--move forward. go back with it later? no worries. Thanks for all the well wishes for my mom. I put her in the hospital this past Friday. they are taking good care of her. she is most upset over not seeing her dog or getting to smoke!!! I been at the hospital mostly last few days. I will be back.cheers!

Ted, as you so rightly said, family first always.

Do you think your mom would use one of  those vapour cigs, or does the hospital not allow them?

They won't let anyone use one of them in my local hospital...... but they will gladly give you a patch. crazy [crazy]

Hope all goes well, take care.
