Hi Guys,

Due to AKAH supply problems been waiting a long time to start an OOB build on my Eduard MiG (purchased to join their Bunny Fighter Club) ... bit difficult to start the cockpit without that elusive Green after all. Over this time I have been in touch with Hobby Colours in Greece a few times, but they have not had their expected deliveries. Yesterday I contacted Ville at Hobby Paint N' Stuff in Finland as suggested below by 'wimve1960' and he is indeed a 'really nice guy' and very forthright.

The supply issue is down to this "They're having big problems at AKAN's factory in Moscow: the whole block has been closed because the lack of proper fire alarm system. That's why all orders from factory have been delayed 3-4 months and stocks are running low, almost empty. I'm waiting to receive the next shipment in June."

That said unlike the situation at Hobby Colours where albeit the sets are currently priced at 13 Euros all of the key Soviet Block ones are out of stock. Ville has a number of these currently available at 13 Euros (old stock) or 14.90 Euros (the new stock). Postage and shipping to the UK comes in at 11 Euros for up to three sets and 17 Euros for up to six sets.

So for 56.06 Euros including shipping and the PayPal charges I got 3 sets/18 paints for £43.14 or about £2.40 a 15ml pot for authentic colour. Finland being part of the EU there are no further import charges, these prices include Finnish VAT at 24%. I asked my questions late afternoon, placed an order in the evening, received my PayPal invoice this morning and they are already in the post to me as I type ... that is what service is all about!

I therefore fully recommend Hobby Paint N' Stuff at http://www.hpns.eu/ to all Soviet Aviation Modellers who are currently struggling to source a suitable supply.

Peter

Something about this explanation just doesn't sound right to me. It reminds me of a poorly spun story from the Propaganda Ministry. [wink]

Hi Rob,

This was the unprompted explanation provided by Ville, and nothing has been provided to me by Hobby Colours in Greece other than place email alerts on each of the sets I wanted and I would know when they were restocked (let's just say I'm still waiting for those to fire into my eMail). Otherwise the UK Importer will take your order at £17.99 a set/ £3.00 a pot, plus an unspecified shipping charge and I was almost at that stage. The RRP was 13 Euros a set and has now gone up to 14.90 Euros. The exchange rate is 1.35 Euros to the £, so these are the choices we have. Importing from Lindon Hill in the USA was not an alternative option for me.

Is the explaination true? [confused]  I don't know, but remember the supply issues with Humbrol when the factory suffered from a fire years ago when we all had to use enamels. Down to the modeller at the end of the day, but there are some very unique authentic Soviet block colours in this range that are simply not around in others. To some an approximation of the color is fine and to others when you intend to spend hours refining a kit and loading it with multi-media extras then you want to get the best possible color matches. To each his/her own I say.

I wanted these sets since I saw Bobby's videos on his MiG and have been waiting nearly six months now, I guess the difference is this supplier has supply and within 12 hours I had what I wanted ordered and dispatched at a reasonable price.

All the best with your modelling,
Peter

It's interesting to note that AKAN paints don't enjoy a good reputation on some forums, while they get raves on others. I, too, find myself being Influenced by Bobby's willingness to use these paints on his work. I mean, seriously, have you ever seen a closer match to those unique Soviet cockpit colours than what you get with AKAN!? This forum, overall, seems willing to try new and innovative products, and that's something I'm coming to really enjoy. [smile]

No matter how long the wait, or no matter what's causing the wait, I'm willing to give AKAN's products a try. [thumb]

Cheers.

Hey batcode,

I have never experienced any problems spraying with these paints suitably thinned with Bobby's 'home brew' thinners with either of my Iwata airbrushes ... a Hi-Line HP-CH which has 0.3mm needle assembly or my Iwata Custom Micron CM-C Plus (v2) 0.23mm matched head system.

All my AKAH paints are USSR or Soviet Block which is where their unique color range lies and tend to use Vallejo or Hataka for Vietnam sets, but would not have thought that would make much difference. I generally thin well and drop the pressure back, adjusting it on the Iwata MAC valves built into these airbrushes.

Unfortunate you should experience problems and generally I would not spray Mr.Color or Gunze any differently, both flow well but need their unique thinners in my opinion.

Better luck with them next time,
Peter

I have used the Akan paints for spraying quite a few times now and the results are very good, very smooth and good coverage. I use the standard Vallejo thinners in a 50/50 mix and airbrush pressure at around 20. To be honest, I have a lot more problems with Tamiya paints.

cheers,
Wim.

It is very interesting to witness such propaganda against Hobby Colours.
Let us enlighten you about some issues here in this topic just to put the things in order again.

If Ville is a nice guy then the guys from Hobby Colours must be the "bad" ones!

We informed our customers about the delays and in a very "diplomatic" way for not spreading the panic that maybe AKAN colors will stop produced. Some information should stay "in house" and this is not a common practice from new dealers that they will use any information just to get more customers. We know many information about Alexander (owner of AKAN) since we are very closed mates but we decided not to use them and get any advantage. The fire alarm system delayed the production only for one month, what about the other 3 months? again no comment from us!

Concerning our restocking: we ordered beginning of February and the first shipment reach us by 29 of MAY and Yes we were the first company that start restocking from AKAN after the 4 months delay. Ville was the last in the row!

Hobby Colours is the first European dealer (starting from October 2012) that stocked AKAN colors in massive quantities and many modellers finally was able to use and enjoy the AKAN series.

We are serving more than 48 Countries while only UK has more than 10% in our sales funnel.

Many satisfied Customers, wholesale of AKAN paints in other Countries, the only stock of AKAN where 95% of the production is available to purchase. All series are available and shipping worldwide (Enamel - Lacquer - Acrylic - Accessories)

We are also located in EU (GR)

The lowest price for AKAN paints from any other online shop.

Our shipping charges are fair and delivery to UK is from 4-6 days.

Should we continue?
