Hello,

I broke down and got a new compressor with a tank, and I'm really glad I did. My old compressor was getting a lot of water in the line and had the pulsing. The new one is same style of compressor, but with the tank and auto on/off. Much nicer to work with.

My question is about the tank and maintenance. I know between sessions I should drain the tank, but what is the longest you would leave it filled? If I spray in the morning, is it safe to leave the tank full until the afternoon?  I read about water getting into the tank. Is this common? does bleeding the tank take care of it?

Thanks!

Hi Seth. Anytime you compress air, moisture naturally gets produced. More so when it's humid. It probably depends on a number of factors, but I generally think to drain my workshop compressor once a month.

Does your compressor have a water trap valve, as this can get rid of most of the water produced giving you a clean spray. If it doesn't have one you can buy them to fit between the compressor and airbrush.

Rob: Thanks for the info. I am currently draning it after every spray, I guess I can let it go a bit longer [smile]

Nigel: Yes, I have a water trap valve, I am just wondering about water in the tank itself or if there might be structural issues down the road if I keep it full.  I know it is completely irrational, but I have this image of it coming apart under pressure .. violently [smile]

By the way Seth, good call on getting a compressor with a tank. I don't know how people can live with the noise from an on-demand style compressor. What did you buy?

I just got a little AS-186. It seems to do the job for what I need. It does have the auto on/off and it still sometimes surprises me when it kicks on.
