Paul, nice ideas...but I'm a little too old to take on another kid.

I've been re-thinking about how to display the A4. After looking at numerous videos, and stills I've noticed that it is catapulted off the deck and all wheels are on the deck. On the other hand, when it takes off from a ground runway it's front wheel lifts off first (the way I want it to be), so it's a no brainer and I've decided to show it on a concrete runway.

Nigel it was my way of saying I hope it aint gonna be bad news was all [smile]

Anyhow, just to explore the idea further coz it's fun [biggrin]

You're right about the catapults but there is that final moment as it
leaves the deck when the front wheel is released and the plane just
begins to rotate whilst the rear wheels remain (briefly) on the deck.

I've not seen a dio depicting that moment before, just like this photo,
that magic moment of imminent take off, this way you avoid sticking
in its rear hole and show off that glorious tail pipe to great effect [biggrin]

The fact that it's a tail sitter with removable wings which makes
ballasting and balancing easy, a 1mm whole in each wheel with matching
pegs in the end of the deck so the model just slots on and off.
Would be a dramatic dio without the model being fettered by external
stands etc. especially with the glowing exhausts etc.

Of course this means building the end corner of the deck etc. which would
need to be elevated slightly to create some space underneath the plane
to help create that "suspended in a moment of time" feel [smile]

Nigel, I think it would look cool fixed to the edge of the flight deck as paul mentioned, and you will only need to make the edge of the deck (great pic by the way)

Talking of pics, is that one with the sub for real ? Lol !

I can't see how it's possible for that jet to take off from there, we've all heard the joke "as useful as a parachute on a submarine" but a jet ?

I do like the idea, I've found a few more pics. Not all of them had safety nets under the edge.

I suppose I could just build a slice and mount it on a plain base. The actual deck surface I'm not too worried about, and I have plenty of styrene sheets. The overhang wouldn't need too much detail....am I glad I put no weight in the nose, this would be one great balancing act.
The deck would have to be at a slight incline and I would not have to detail the catapult.

I'm going to have a good dig around my bits boxes.

The sub carrier photo appeared in a newspaper/journal, and has never been proved to be fake. When enlarged you can just make out the RAAF markings, but what is puzzling me is the number of people around the A4. None seem to be wearing a life jacket and they look like tourists.
I think this is actually fake, but they did tend to do some pretty strange things. New Zealand still has a running squadron of A4's. ...but not one aircraft carrier !

Glad you like the idea guys [smile]
Just seemed like a perfect fir for this build [smile]

This is kinda where my thinking was going, but using the front right launch catapult of the Nimitz so you can do a little front edge and side detail of the deck, or at least enough to suggest flight deck -

Now...aircraft carrier overhanging edge...scratch build from nothing.?...?....!

Okay, let's approach this from another angle.. kettle on for a nice cup of Typhoo....

I suppose nothing is something, so that's a good start.

Told my son my problem.. he said " Dad, you can do that." , (I can ?). "Dad it's simple", (it is ?) " you've got one up stairs",. (I have ?), " It's the big black case with a handle that you carry all your models in . You could fit a lot of Aircrafts in that." OMG, give me strength

oh well just try something.

Here's a pic.

"kettle on for a nice cup of Typhoo" N !! [biggrin]

We can scratch build from nothing especially a couple of oblongs to sit upon [wink]

Good start though Nigel ! [smile]
add the suggestion of a catapult slot, some painting should pull that off well enough,
add a little rust here and there and good to go [smile]
And maybe a block of something at the back to hold it all up ! [biggrin]

I can definitely see you getting "most original" for this one ! [smile]

Yes I agree.

What I do have is a set of decals from Italeri kit No.1326 Carrier deck section which I am going to use and weather.
I'm also going to search through my spare PE sets and maybe add a few surface panels under the overhang just to break up the smooth surface. With these I can weather and rust.

Letting the whole thing dry for an hour.

Yeah, perhaps not as close as I thought,
looking at this photo I reckon about 4 yards or so which is about 2 inches at 1/72 scale.
I'm guessing that the distance from the rear wheels to the tail pipe on a 1/72nd A4 is
about 3 inches maybe and you probably want about 4 or 5 inches of deck otherwise
your model will be hanging over both ends which would spoil the illusion in my view.
But the catapult slot could be done as simple as a light grey rectangle with a matt black stripe up the middle [smile]

One of those front corners looks ideal to me though, not to much detail

[USS_Nimitz_(CVN-68)]

This is the bit I would use, a nice square bit off the front corner
as I feel one would need enough deck to make it feel more than
a little ledge otherwise it might look like it's balancing on a beam [biggrin]

[196676-o]

Anyhow, all food for thought [smile]
Great that you are open to suggestions though and I am sure which ever way you go it will look cool !! [biggrin]
