Continued with the paint job, and now the turn has come to the fuselage. The wood grain decals I will use are transparent so I painted the wood base colour. Picked out a few panels with different shades

Also did some lighting and shades

So now it's time for some gloss and then on to the wood decals. I'm quite excited to see how it will come out.

And finally a picture of the exhaust pipe. Black base coat, steel polishing powder from Uschi, stippled brown, red and orange, followed by rust and smoke pigments

can't wait to see the "wood effects" on the fuselage. interesting, very interesting.

Last balsa and tissue plane I built as a teen was a Fokker D-I triplane with a 24" wingspan. Not a flying build. Kind of getting excited over these recent WWI builds!

BTW--I'd challenge anyone to prove that those exhausts are styrene!

Before I wnt to bed yesterday I decided to lay down a layer of gloss so it would have time to settle over night...shouldn't done that. Don't know if I was tired or what but I managed to make a real mess, the varnish pooled up and my panic solution was to apply even more to try to even it out....didn't work.

So this morning I sanded it down as good as I could and gave it another, this time thin coat of Klear and it looks ok, not as good as it could and should but anyway.

I've tested the decals and I think it will look really good when they are all on.

Did as the manufacturer recommended, outlined the panel on masking tape and transferred it to the decal sheet.

Two panels applied

Quite time consuming and hard to tell how it will look before I get more panels covered.

Thanks for your time

Thanks Mike! I got a few more panels covered and the decals are great. A bit hard to work with but the result is really good.

That is looking excellent IMHO. I am betting that when you go back and overcoat all of the work with a flat [?] coating it will be satisfactory to you. this is really going to be cool.

Thank you Ted! Yeah that flat coat is a real savior [smile]. And I'm leaning towards a flat finish. The plywood panel where varnished but I think a it will look more real under a flat coat, maybe I try a satin finish we will see.

A small update this time, just to let you know that I covered all panels with the wood grain decals.

Next up some PE, the "normal" decals and detail painting. It's also soon time to start prepare for the rigging.

As always, thanks for following my build!

With a nice brown wash over those panel lines this is going to look superb. One of the reasons I picked my Albatros was the beautiful combination of wood and metal these planes seem to have as a common theme around the fuselage. Those decals have given you an edge in that respect. They look amazing!  [smile]
