Hello all together. Next Update on the Tomcat. The "Solder-challenge" has been mastered and I'm quite happy with th result. OK, there is room for improvements. The next time, I will test solder-grease (that's how we call it in germany) instead of soldering fluid. Maybe this keeps the solder more localized around the joint. We will see. But soldering will be my "weapon of choice" when PE parts has to be connected. especially by edge-to-edge joints.

Next part was basecoating the fuselage. I was a bit concerned about running nout of paint (AK Light Gull Gray), so I decided to start with the smaller parts like slats, wheel well doors etc. first. And here they are:

With enough paint left, I sprayed the fuselage. No roblems there. The problems came with the gloss coat. On some areas I got a real nasty finish, very uneven (especially in the top area between the two engines.) But as there will be only very small decals in this area, I decided not  to spray again an maybe loose some panel lines. We will see how things comes out. The anti-glare-panel in front of the cockpitt will be repainted with a gray that has a better match with the anti-skid decals on top of the air-intakes.

Hopefully my order from AK interaktive (metal paints and washes) will arrive this week, so I can finish and install th engines.

See you.

I've never soldered PE but I have seen some short videos about it. I will try someday? I have a small iron and solder.
The painted parts look great! nice pre-shade coming through!

Nice job on the PE and the build.

Regarding soldering, a grease is indeed a bit easier for PE as you can paint it on and the flow of the solder is a lot better than with fluid. However, you should test a few greases, you do not want them to be too thick. I use a grease with the consistency of a hobby paint for hand painting (like properly mixed Revell paint) and brush it on.

Sorry again for the delay, but this is (hopefully ) the last Update before the final reveal. TBH, the decaling was the hell! Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the kit decals for this. The are very good and react very nice with Microsol and -set. It was just because of my sh.... glosscoat! I tried everything jou can imagine to get a nice smooth finish, but it remained uneven and most of the smaler panellines were filled up with the gloss. I tried a rescribe on the underside (where it will be hidden by the TARPS-Pod) with the result of a complete paint rip-off down to the naked plastic. So I decided to skip the final wash because there might be a good chance to meke things worser than they are in the moment.

And finally some parts (nearly) ready for installation.

If nothing goes wrong I will reach the deadline at the last moment but I'll be more than happy tho get this build done. There were several moments in the last weeks when I was fighting with the Tomcat (again: I do not blame the kit) and the final flight into the bin was very close. For this reason I am more than happy to put this aircraft on the display shelf instead of the famous "shelf of doom".
