The are no panel lines (raised or recessed) on the cowlings of my Airfix Catalina. Looking as reference photos these panels clearly existed and were quite noticable against the white painted surfaces. I tried normal pre shading but was not happy with the results against the white as I could not get the pre shade lines thin enough. So this morning I tried pre shading using a 0.1mm rotring pen. However when I sprayed white acrylic over this the ink ran! I quickly wiped things down with a cotton bud dipped in home made thinner but it streaked. Then I realised that the streaking looked quite effective as weathering and the lines had been toned down by the thinner. So I tried the technique again on the rear of the engine fairing. See picture attached. Needs some tidying up and maybe another mist coat of white but I think my accident is quite effective. PS exhaust stacks yet to be added.

A happy accident indeed, that looks just the job.
