Hi all well since I've nearly finished the Spits and the Lanc I thought it was time to start back on the Corvette and this little beauty that I've just taken delivery of, I must say I thought the 1/6 bikes box were huge but even they pale into insignificance when compared to this beast.

That said the box could be half this size

The moulding detail is beautiful

The instructions however could do with some work, one written page in english everything else is in French.

and why put these on the top where they could get creased like this, if theyed been on the bottom this would not have happened

Hopefully I can iron them out.

I have taken a very stupid chance and bought a very (well I think its very expensive) guilding kit just for this. I gulp, am going to try useing real gold leaf wherever the ship has gold. I have never guilded anything in my life so we will see, have I wasted my money, am I going to ruin this kit, stay tunefor the next exciting episode.

Hi all as I said I've never guilded before should I paint the blue first then guild over that or should I guild the part first then paint the blue over it, and if painting is first should I use gloss paint guild over that then matt coat the blue.

Looks mega-interesting Ken!
As far as guilding goes? I have no idea but youtube might, or google/bing whatever your search poison is.
If I didn't have any "training" resource I'd probably guild first then paint. Only because paint is a liquid and can cover any errant gold leaf.
What's a guilding kit look like?

Not so much a kit, a tin to keep the bits in 2 brushes one soft and one hard bristled an envelope of gold leaf a bottle of size and a bottle of shellac that's it no instructions, so hardly a kit really.

Well here is my first attempt at guilding.

not sure wether to do a wash to highlight the detail or not, dont know if it will kill the shine on the gold, and if I did what colour should i use.

Are you clear coating the leaf? I know almost nothing about it, but I do know it is extremely fragile and I'm curious to know what concerns you may have about it too. I'm learning with you on this one Ken.

Hi mike its going to be a very steep learning curve mate, you're right it is fragile, doing solid stuff is relatively easy you just paint the size on leave it for at least 15 mins till it goes tacky (if you do it too soon the gold just won't stick) so if it don't stick you've been too impatient leave it a bit longer. The filigree or rails that's another story, it's only supposed to stick to the size, which it does but, when you brush the loose stuff off there are little bits at the edges which won't seem to brush off with the soft brush it dosnt notice too much on the filigree bits but does on the rails and the flure de lys on the sides of the ship. I can't seem to find a way of getting rid of it, I thought I had a good idea and got a stiff brush to get the loose bits off, nope it took all the gold off, then I thought a gentle rub with a clean hanky nope that took it off too. As for clear coating it the kit came with shellac to protect the gold (no idea what it is, I assume some sort of thin varnish)not tried it yet as the brushes have to be cleaned in methylated spirits, I don't have any at the moment but my missus is shopping today so I've added it to her list.i think when she comes back with the meths I will paint it over the gold which will (I hope) stick the loose bits down then I can touch up the ragged bits with the hull colour paint.

Hi all here is a bit of an update. I have a big problem with this kit and dont know how much further I can go with it. there is supposed to be 2 sprues number 17 and 2 number 18 but there is only 1 of each, I have emailed Heller and asked for the missing sprues to be sent but have no idea what their customer service is like I'm hopeing they will send them as the kit is useless without them and I will have to bin it otherwise. so will do what I can and hope they will send the parts sooner rather than later.

Good progress Ken. She's certainly looking good with the gold leaf on her. 1/75th scale? I wonder if they make some figs for that or if 1/72 is close enough?

I know nothing about ships, but that one is a pretty one. I can see why she caught your eye mate.  [smile]
