In the AK interactive YouTube series that Bobby had made, he uses 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the model prior to applying the primer.

I was wondering, how will the IPA affect aftermarket parts such as resin, photo etch and the CA glue?

Thanks

I use IPA extensively. I use it to clean my AB with [for water soluble paints], to clean paint off pieces were I goofed, and to clean styrene before painting. I've never had a problem with IPA affecting Resin, or PE, or CA glue in particular. But I don't use 99% either. That % is expensive according to what I have looked up online---its a laboratory product I think? I use 91% and it is readily available and cheap here [US]. I also have some 70% as well as some 50% from the discount store. So if you have a fear of IPA being destructive, use a lower % of concentration. Best idea? take sample of what you asked about and drop them in a small container of IPA. See what happens. It would be easy enough to take a high% IPA and dilute it with water into other containers and label it? Hope this helps but wait for other modelers to chime in.I am by no means an authority on anything here. some experience, but no authority.

Good advice Ted.  I also use 91% IPA for thinning and cleaning acrylic paints.  It is cheap and found at Walmart here in the USA.

Thanks. Yes, Walmart has the 91% as well as the 70%, and family dollar stores have 50% for some reason (?). The 99% must be ordered and what I found available was very expensive.

I'm in the UK, I buy from Amazon and have Amazon prime, can buy IPA @ 90% for approx £2/ litre (approx 1.8 pints) with free delivery. I've had no adverse effects on styrene plastic, epoxy or CA adhesives.

I also use this to make Genesis Home made thinners for acrilics and I find this thinner excellent for Tamiya paints, a lot cheaper than the Tamiya thinners and possibly better especially in hot conditions and weather.

In UK we have ASDA (Wallmart owned) and I'll have to try their pharmacy to see if can buy it there!

Ted USA, thanks for your feed back and giving me the idea to try my local super market [smile]
