So here is my entry. Bandai's Evangelion Unit 03 - Production Model from 1996.

Evangelion was a very influential show for me growing up and for me personally it's second only to Star Wars. This particular Eva unit was featured during the episode 18 of the original anime, in which the Eva Unit is taken over by The 13th Angel, Bardiel. This forces the protagonist Shinji and his Eva Unit 01 to battle Eva Unit 03, which is unknowingly being piloted by his friend, Toji.

The bulk of my modelling background is Gundam (all scales) with the odd Sci-fi vehicle or military vehicle/scene. So i wanted to do something that plays to my strengths but also forces me to face some new challenges.

The completed model will be part of a diorama, depicting Eva-03 dashing through Tokyo-3. Now mild spoilers here but the Eva's aren't exactly mecha, they are in fact quite organic. However they are piloted and armored up. I will be increasing the level of detail on the kit to make it look more armored but maintaining a very organic pose.

I will be giving the kit a very metallic finish for the armor and perhaps make some small changes to the paint scheme. Blending the traditional look with the updated look from the new OVAs.

I would like to see Bob take on some Mecha. People don't take Mecha seriously but painting something with tons of moving parts isn't exactly something for beginners! I'll be posting more Gundams once i get my photography situation sorted. All i have so far is some awful pics of my 1/100 U.S Army Strike Custom build from about a year back.

"I would like to see Bob take on some Mecha."

yeah me too [smile]

"People don't take Mecha seriously
"

I don't think that's true, it's just not quite as accessible or popular as it is in Japan say.
Anyone who does a kit well will always be appreciated etc. [smile]

Anyhow, liking the dramatic pose in the last photo very cool [smile]
at the 1/100 scale this is gonna be a decent build !

After an extremely long holiday, i've jumped straight into this over the passed couple of weeks and made some progress.

Firstly i changed my mind about what i want to do with this kit. Rather than detail it up and make the armor look more realistic, i'm going to keep it a bit more basic and concentrate on the paint finish. I want a contrast of high gloss metallics broken up with really smooth, flat block colours. I'll then add detail by using additional decals to the ones that come with this kit.

In terms of the paint scheme i'm going to stick to the original design as seen on the box, the newer design is just a bit too over the top in my opinion. Finally i'll create a somewhat artsy base for the model with some embossed text.

So the first problem i face with this kit is the arms. They come as one whole piece with a rubbery sort of sleeve and joints all well hidden underneath. I've never used enamel on rubber before so i'm not too sure how well it hold up. Hopefully if i pose the arms in the postion i require them in before painting, all should be fine.

Speaking of arms....HANDS! The hands that some with this kit are so boring and seem a bit small. It does also come with additional hands but they are for grasping weapons, which i'm not including in this build to keep it true to the original anime. So instead i dug out all my old Evangelion toys from the 90's which are luckily to scale with this kit. I'm using the actual hands that come with Eva Unit 03, they're just a bit more menacing and help to depict the pose i'm aiming for.

Another change to kit will be changing the angle of the entry plug cover. I'm going to be modelling the entry plug semi-ejected and covered in white/green goo, as per the anime. This kits comes with an option for that but the cover pops straight up and still kind of restricts the view of the entry plug, so i've cut this part in two and will glue it in to place at the end of the build.

The torso interior and and cockpit area were hand painted using Revell Aqua Colors and GW Citadel after a grey prime and matt black.

I then spent a good weekend sanding, filing and re-sanding the rest of the armor parts. At this point i noticed another tricky part that popped up with this kit is having to complete the knee joints, then mask up, attach them to the legs, complete the legs then unmask the joints after full painting is completed. I feel there will probably be a bit of touching up to do in that area towards the end of the build.

Because i've just moved house, my new hobby room isn't yet fully set up and i'm unable to airbrush this build. As Halfords primers have proven their worth over the last few years, i've decided to use Halfords sprays for the whole build. I used the grey plastic primer under the matt black. Very happy with the quality of the matt black. It's extremely smooth and seals well with Humbrol Matt top coat.

Everything was then carefully masked before a gloss coat and seal.

The latest is i've applied the metallic coat using enamels and a clear laquer. However i'm not 100% happy with the metaillic finish. As can be seen in the preview below the smooth matt contrasts well but metallic has a gold sparkly tint to it (making it look grainy in the picture) I was looking for more of a smooth metallic finish.

Any suggestions how to get a smoother finish? Or can anyone recommend a different metallic black without airbrushing?

Wish I had the info to help with the paint but I don't. Pete [brundledork] has a lot of paint knowledge as well as any of the guys that do figures--Nigel56, M.Brindos, and Toki. you might draw their attention to this thread or send them a message through the system here on Genessis. Best wishes!

I've had to postpone work on this kit. I had a few problems with getting the finish i wanted for majority of the model and that now leaves me a lot less time to complete other elements. I'm not one to rush and make do with a end result inferior to what i imagined so i've decided to enter a different kit instead (which i'll post shortly in new thread)
