A step by step guide to painting this huge model.

I have decided to have Nagash holding a staff, so the sword has been relegated to the bits box.



Shame really, as it is such a nice piece.

Carefully base painted all areas that are going to become bone, with Zhadri Dust.
Important not to do this too thickly and keep it as smooth as possible. At this stage I want all the detail intact.

Once base coat has dried cover with a sloppy coating of Flesh Wash, using a soft large brush.
Make sure that the edges are painted where a different colour is going to be used.



Leave this to completely dry for at least 2 days. Excuse the pun, but this coating has to be bone dry ready for heavy drybrushing.

Whilst waiting I shall clean and construct another part of the model.

I am also going to be using a product I've never used before...Glow-in-the-dark paint.

Thank you Simon. Still training to become a master though. [wink]

Started this a few days ago, so to bring you up to date..the wash is now dry and I'm going to give the bone area it's first dry brush with Ushabti Bone. I've kept this nice and light and brushed in all directions with a very dry brush. My brush was totally dry and I applied a small amount of paint, straight from the pot, and then brushed it off before using it on the model (no water).



I have also neatly painted in areas with Mephiston Red.

All the paints I'm using are Acrylics from the Citadel range. Some have the retro name and some are no longer made. If I use any other branded paint I will mention it at the time when using it.

Glad you added you had already started this two days ago i thought i had time traveled.
Brilliant effect on the handle. I used some citadel paints on the dragon and having never used them before have to say i thought they are great. They brush on well and smooth out nice and flat.

The bone looks fantastic, I have a few citadel paints too, they are very nice to paint with, nice strong pigments
What does the figure look like Nigel ?

Okay, fresh from the net, with comparison model next to it to show the size of this model.

Now that's impressive !

Just noticed that i am going to have to cut the sword to attach to the scabard on his belt.

That is impressive !

I didn't realise that it was such a large model, it will be a fantastic piece when it's finished, is it plastic or resin the detail is amazing

This one is plastic and comes on two sprues.
Two very large sprues.
There are some peices missing but I should be able to scrounge something similar from another model and slightly alter them. ( I have a photocopy of the sprues) [thumb]

No pressure then.

When I paint a model, like this one, I don't look at the artwork on the box (which I can't thankfully) or one that's been already painted. I like to think about what colours I want to use and work from that.
I've got a list of colours I think work well with an Undead character model.

Black (obviously); Violet/Purple; Red; Gold; Bone (wet); Bone (petrified); and very dark Greens and Midnight Blues.

The difference between the two types of Bone is that the wet one is like what I have done with the staff, with the glossy wash showing through the matt pale bone. What I would call a meaty look.
The petrified Bone is exactly that, a grey toned stone colour.

I am working nights over the holiday week, and busy entertaining the "troops" at home, but I do intend to do some painting to relax and I think I would prefer to do this model and leave the stenciling of the Phantom for a while.
