Celebrating the 50th anniversary of mankinds single greatest achievement ever later this year
I thought this might be an ideal model for me at the moment given everything else in my life etc.
nice and simple, few parts and nothing to complex [biggrin]

Would have been nice if it had included the Lunar Rover but hey, definitely not the best kit of the LEM out there
but I think a bit of Green & Blacks milk chocolate gold foil wrapping will help things along just nicely [wink]

Unlikely I'll be using the "diorama" provided, think I'll be doing the "Blue Peter" thing (google it) and making my own from kitchen refuse [biggrin]

Hopefully I'll actually finish this one given I've failed to do so over the last 2 or 3 GB's ....
As usually I'll be aiming for that "Original Trophy" [biggrin]

Enjoy your build, I'll try to find you a theme song. Bowie's Major Tom springs to mind but sure I'll find something special...........just for you

I ws hoping that some one else may have entered the GB so I could've been the 11th project on the table haha [biggrin]

some other contenders CellerRat and Fabian [wink]

anything off Dark Side of the Moon ( by the best band in the world [wink] )
Walking on the Moon
Space Man
Space is Deep and Endless - if anyone here remembers Hawkwind ?
Holst also did his Planet Suite
Star Man
Interstellar Overdrive ( also by the best band in the world [wink] )
Fly Me Too The Moon
I guess anything by Jefferson Starship
Space Cowboy
Anything by Orbital I guess

But I think I'm going to go with this one [biggrin]

although to be fair Apollo 11 was more Space Jeep than truck !! [biggrin]
That said the Saturn V pushing it up there was one hell of a Space Truck ! [wink]

I'm waiting on CellerRat's surprise tune !
I'm sure there's a few more out there I aint thought of yet haha [biggrin]

Cheers Ian, it's an old kit alright !!

Steven, haha hadn't thought of that one either !!

now that I'm in the mental prep phase and doing research I'm noticing a number of inaccuracies that are beginning to bug me....
not as nice as the Academy kit as seen in Christian Bruer's photo at the bottom, (which has some additional scratch building on it)
no surprise though, it was released in 1970 so it was a rush job putting it together,
no doubt Airfix wisely waited for a successful mission before going to the faff of tooling up [wink]

The window is the one that bugs me most, need to round the corners and change the lines to align parallel with the surrounding frame,
then add a sheet on the flat face above to create an overhanging lip to get the "eyebrow" look ..

Next is the big triangular flap on the right all molded in as one with the rest of the body...
this is supposed to be a structural rod ... no doubt Airfix had limited reference [wink]

The door is way to recessed with CHUNKY features ... little red arrow shows depth in the door way.
need to be flatish and flush etc.

This machine aint symmetrical and there's a lump missing on it's lower cheek..

There's (unsurprisingly) a number of other features missing from this "rare" classic vintage kit,
such as the docking window, a few more lumps & bumps, oh and some panel lines haha [cool]

I'm surprised just how much of it is covered in foil and mat black sheet etc.
reference shows a distinctly tatty side to the construction ...
I find myself contemplating how to emulate the buckling the sheet metal went through by time it landed on the moon because it went through some quite extreme heat cycles ...

I choose to build this kit of a model that went to the moon before the end of the decade,
and I choose this kit not because it was hard, but because it was easy !!

well that's a well known speech I've rather mangled ... lol [biggrin]
