I figured since I've enter the patch design competition I had better join in on this one too [smile]
However looking at the rest of the entries I have a feeling I'll be coming last ! [biggrin]

I've cocked up the photo's a bit and they're not as complete as they should be and thus might not quite meet the rules but I don't not winning if you don't mind me joining in [smile]

Started three weeks ago not thinking to join this group because of the high standard etc. but then I thought what the hell, the deadline might spur me on [smile]

Anyhow, the PBY Catalina Airfix 1/72 pretty much out of the box with a few extra scraps here and there.

The wings, thought I would try some weight at the front to help ballasting the front end as any weight in front of the wheels has gotta help [smile]

Also trying a couple of other things preshading with felt marker & air thinners and using AK Metal oils for the ali with the idea of some chipping round the front edges.

Some painted bits, had a go at hand painting the instrument panel, a bit cartoony but it'll give an impression of detail once closed up etc. [smile]

There is barely any interior detail on this old Airfix kit and rather than scratch build it i decide to just draw some in there and a few tabs of plastic for some panels and paint afterwards with cables drawn and painted afterwards, simple but will make it look it something inside it [smile]

cheers bud [smile]

yeah it's a nice, quick and simple way of adding an impression of
detail that aint there, good for rapid builds and small scales etc.

I was tempted to painted a thin bead of gloss along the top edges of the
cables so when the light catches it looks more 3D but given that it will all
be closed up it aint worth it, this is probably good enough for me [smile]

Just closing up the fuselage now, just gotta stick some windows in first

Cheers Ted, much appreciated [smile]

Pilots legs are getting in the way of the dashboard so I have some minor cutting and jiggling to do, great fun [biggrin]

Gotta say though I am stunned by some of the work here in this GB, just awesome !! [biggrin]

Very clever painting on the interior details, I haven't seen that done before it looks very effective mate !

And don't be shy about amputating the pilots, these little styrene fellas love it

Cheers Pete,

it's a cheap trick but it was so bare in there I couldn't bear it.. bah
the instrument panels on the side the number tabs cut off the sprue and painted etc.
all the black is pen work, bit of chipping and a tidy up, chuck in some posts and we have the impression of an interior [smile]

Also used this cheap trick on the needles for the dials and in the wheel wells too,
cheaper than the resin bits [biggrin]  (but not as good)

anyhow crew hacked and glued etc. [smile]

Cheers Fabian,
still feels like cheating but I have thought of a few ways of improving it by using the black pen as an inbetween coats preshader and come over it again with a thin coat just to knock the blackness of the pen back a bit and then do some fine pen for the shadows.
Then use a gloss lighter colour for the highlights so it can catch the light and enhance that 3D impression,

I think this quick trick would be handy on overly simplistic cockpit walls, especially if the canopy is closed up etc.
Basically though it's just an old theater painting trick but I am glad you all like the idea though [smile]

Cheers bud [thumb]

A bit more progress made, just about ready to clap the sides together [smile]
and just to make sure it aint a tail sitter 16 pence in the nose and ounce of plasticine, that's about 3 ounces !!!
Models feel better when they are balanced in the right place, hang better too [smile]

I try to get the CG close on all my models, makes going VRRRROOOOOM so much more refined !! [biggrin]

Anyhow, a couple of photos of the ballast and balance, got it sitting about 7mm in front of the rear wheels. good enough
