looking the part Tim. A you wrote, some parts of modeling seem boring, but necessary to get the result we want! Not like when I was a kid and glued and painted up a model in about an hour! horrible looking they were!

I feel the same way, when I was younger I would build a model plane as fast as possible with no paint and then fly it around the house like a toy.  Oh well, whatever gets you started in the hobby!!!!

Hehe, of course we are still flying. Now I just sit in a chair and close one eye as I do a high speed flyby on the side of my head. every now and then I hold the plane out and spin the office chair--mostly banking as if I am in a dogfight? I do I think I make better sound effects now that I did 45yrs ago!

As a teen, the sound effects were mostly sputtering noises. Now I feel as if I can replicate the tight turns, takeoffs, and of course, sonic booms.

Update on the progress of this model.

Next task on the list was to scratch build the radio whip antenna.  As you can see in the picture below, it is different then most P-51s.

[DSC_0243_zpsdipajnnv]

Started with some styrene......

[DSC_0254_1491094698251_zpsm5srjei6]

cut the base to shape and wrapped the raised bit around and glued in place.  Then punched a hole for the antenna and she's done.

Here is the plane with the canopy masked and everything ready for paint....

And here is the canopy with the interior colour applied.....

Next step will be primer.

Thanks for looking,

Past few nights I was able to get the primer on and the pre-shading done.  Had a few problems with the first application of primer with splattering but I think that was because the bottle was older and at it's end.  Had to sand down the surface a bit to smooth it out then sprayed a second coat with a new bottle and everything looks good.  As for the pre-shade, I tried using XF-62 red brown instead of my usual black or dark grey.  We'll see how it turns out once the top colours are on.  Also for something different I added some black pre-shade for the machine guns and engine exhaust.
