Looking great so far Alec[thumb], as far as the base arrow...I'd take some of the gravel and color it with a thinned mix of a dark gray. When you do the base mask off the arrow first, lay on the regular gravel then when that dries remove the mask and lay in the colored gravel in the arrow.....should look awesome
                                           Good Luck,   Dave

The start of the base is from items that i had about the house, To try and keep the cost to a minimum.
Base is some packaging out of my Air compressor polystyrene tiles, I looked up how to make the base online, they noted using plaster of paris but when i priced this up its about £12 a bag. I had some all purpose filler (B&Q 99p)
So the All purpose filler it is [biggrin] whats the worst that could happen ????? if it doesn't work
could always go back to school days and use papier mache lol

Had to join two pieces of polystyrene and weighted it down to keep it flat until the filler dries.
IMG_20140111_173008Good use of the takeaway trays

IMG_20140111_173012Seems to go on easy enough no reaction with the polystyrene

IMG_20140111_175202New to this got more over the bench than on the base (good job her in doors cant see this would be in the dog house lol[biggrin])
IMG_20140111_175212
smooth out once it starts to dry a bitIMG_20140111_175237Once dry, I will put a thin layer on the centre as note on earlier thread "mask out the arrow"

thanks for letting us look in on the process of that base again. good info!!
edit: indeed, don't let the lady of the house see some of your "masonry" work--you might get worse than the dog house. looks like you need some newspapers down? but dosen't it always happen that you are totally convinced work will be neat and tidy, then it gets everywhere!!!?? best wishes. I look forward to seeing more pictures as you move along.
