bit of work as I am stranded at home today. will need base since I am making this an in-flight build.

needs sanding and then some "terrain" for the POD RACER to fly over.

Love the idea of this. Cant wait to see what you come up with. There were some great designs in that Podrace scene, really overlooked generally.

Hey Ted,
that slender plank made me think of these motion blur bases you can get [smile]

This might work for a pod racer, got the hi res version too [smile]

Seth Tim, and Paul---thanks for the comments guys! Paul, I chose that plank for that very reason. I will be applying a base color, then streaking a darker shade into it to create the "motion". I will also have some 3D stones with elongated shadows. I am also going to have a second base piece of wider, thicker wood that will be black to give some high contrast and more weight to the base overall.great idea!

I got some Bench time today at UNIT10 and I really enjoyed it. I managed to round up ALL of the possible greeblies and spares parts that I may use. Just have to match off the pairs and objects that I have 4 of as well. I think the "look" I will be using is beginning to come out a bit more? several external "systems" on the car body. Pipes, vents, hatches, panel lines. Last step will include antennae and struts as you would with the small bits on an aircraft. Unfortunately, I ran into a major twist in the chassis of the Mercury. I will have to bring those parts home and boil some water to soften the chassis piece, then glue it in place and weight the assembly down to see if it will bond and hold the correct shape. the chassis provides some great detail and attachment points for other detail I will add underneath the car. I have some greeblie jet exhaust parts which will represent the cars ability to have VTOL in preparation for a run or to operate without the cabled engines if needed. the cockpit will be open rather than a canopy. The detail will be easier to see as well as the pilot. I will need a small clear windscreen. I made choices from the 3 sets of bumpers and grills that kept in line with a more ART DECO look. I still have to enclose the front wheel wells and the window openings. AND a MAJOR decision is going back to the cables coming out of the headlamp openings of the Mercury. Its just too natural to avoid IMHO.

AND now lets go to the pictures!

And yes, the car decals and some others in my stash will help me embellish the cockpit panels. YAY!

"Paul, I chose that plank for that very reason."

never under estimate the power of the plank ! [biggrin]
well, that's how well you chose it, it's very suggestive of it's intended use [smile]

Anyhow, awesome you've made a good start,
quite like the pod down the side attaching to the rear wing,
and I'm liking the circular sunroof too [smile]

I like the way you're thinking about aspects of it's functionality.

I enjoy constructive chat about ideas, even if some ideas get dismissed along the way,
it's all part of the process, and contrary views are useful for evaluating decisions but .......

I must confess I've been feeling a bit guilty about my pope mobile pod racer comment.
Not a lot, but definitely a bit hehe [biggrin]
It did amuse me though, the idea of a pope mobile pod racer [smile]

But you've definitely got me thinking about car pod racers with this build,
a happy damn you, that's yet another project on my list ! [biggrin]

Anyhow looking forward to progress and don't forget what
your mission priority is with this build, completion [wink] [biggrin]

No worries Paul---none at all. I thought the Pope Mobile comparison was hilarious.....and what if he showed up in a POD RACER! He would be the one to do it----or perhaps he would prefer your build---he did have a motorcycle before he came to Rome!-spot on with the completion. Really trying to grab bench time and also bringing stuff home to work on it. CHEERS!

Ted I'm so relieved, thank you [smile]
Now I can get back to being a cheeky bugger and start taking the mickey again haha [biggrin]

I think prefer the idea of having the cylinder cockpit open with just a windshield like a speed boat or land speeder etc.
the turret was too imposing aesthetically. Did give some more ideas though.... Ben Hur Pod Racing Chariot !! [biggrin]
or to open the back of the car completely, remove the boot lid, rear wind screen and most of the roof and
have it like an open backed fishing  boat or something like that, kinda like chariots had an open back etc.
My 1/32 Austin Martin keeps whispering "pod racer" in my ear, I'm thinking open back speed boat pod racer with wingy bits and colossal engines [biggrin]

Anyhow, I've got a feeling third time lucky for you Ted ! [wink] [smile]

yes, Paul, take the Mickey!

Great ideas for alternative POD RACERS. bring one to life!

Steven, thank you very much!

I had FIVE hours at UNIT10 today and it was great. Got a lot of stuff done [IMO]. We have started having some rain, then snow, then low temps through the day and evening today--may get home-bound? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr....................

I used some sprue--the round tube looking pieces with four legs and arms, CAN from MIG, CANS from Phantom, headrest and electronics from MIG, wheel pieces from Mercury as well as exhaust parts, most all the chassis detail, a chrome hubcap, radiator and hose from Mercury, brakes from Mercury, air scoop from MIG, some styrene pipe, Mercury "whitewall" ring, shocks from Mercury, etc., etc. today. My Pilot arrived in the post---I left him in the bag to protect him a bit until I get him to the UNIT. Drilling and filling and attaching various Greeblies was the main action as was assembling the chassis components. Feeling great about the look. Hope the snow/ice/temperatures do not keep me away from the UNIT!?

Of course, a LOT left to do. I will be assembling and mounting hoses, conduit, wire, more general greeblies, and now that I have the PILOT I can construct the cockpit and paint---I will also be using some decals in the cockpit. And don't forget the ENGINES---closing in on the final design for the main shell and other primary parts.
