This is the WIP thread for the Batmobile listed above. This kit will be part of diorama #3 in a tri-diorama of Batmobiles. I am going to begin with a short evaluation of the kit: Here is the scalemates layout of the history of the kit. I found this to be relatively complete as to features and reasonably good video--enjoy: Now here are my thoughts: The body mold of the kit is beautiful. the design is my favorite and the lines are fantastic. Best feature of the kit as a whole IMHO. The other added parts and details are nice but the molding overall is not sharp and crisp in general. I'm assigning this downfall to AMT and what I have found in their kits of movie and TV vehicles over the years. Round 2 has improved this area with some of the molding but by and large, they are still not at the top of the hill in this area. The actual 1989 movie Batmobile does NOT have any chrome on it but there is a full sprue of it in this kit. I removed all the chrome with a bleach bath. It took three days to remove 98% of the chroming. The Chroming is thick. I will be posting an actual picture of the movie batmobile in this window with the designer and design team as a reference to the "Real Vehicle". Trust me when I say there are a load of "authentic" reproductions of this car around, but they are not completely authentic in many points.Understand that most of the reproduction Batmobile pictures I post have a metallic nose on the turbine engine, chrome gas caps, and metallic side parts in front of the massive air intakes. The plastic is smooth but pretty soft--don't make any mistakes with a blade or tool or you will find out soon enough. Same goes with low grit sanding products. take it easy. There is quite a bit of what I call micro-flash on the parts. If the part is black like this kit molding, you can easily miss some of this flash if you do not examine each part VERY carefully. I hate micro-flash much more than the flash you often see on older kits/moldings. What follows next are some reference photos and then some of the WIP I have actually completed. Since I am just now posting this up it may not be as easy to follow as my usual WIP--Meaning that I always post WIP progress as I do it, never after the fact more than a day or so at the most. I did not take pictures of the sprues because this is not a GB project and........I got lazy. I'm sure I can find some online with a nominal search and when I do I will post them. So here begins my WIP on the 1989 Batman movie Batmobile. My aim is to prepare the kit to be in a diorama where the Batmobile is in the bat cave having maintenance and upgrades. I will NOT be creating a bat cave like the pictures shown in the movie concept art above or in the actual 1989 movie. Way too much to tackle....right now anyway. Part of chrome removal process. I changed the bleach each day for three days. IN the final bath I removed all the sprue and just dipped the parts. Left over PE frets are a gold mine. I never throw them away. Dabs of Microscale Micro Krystal Klear makes nice knobs. CA glue can also be used of course. I used some old decal sheets for many sections of the cockpit as well as the dash. Silver dry brushing, and Tamiya CLEAR GREEN on computer screens. Sprue and all kinds of shapes punched and cut from sheet styrene help create bottles and "systems". the coiled wire is simply very fine copper wire wrapped around a small diameter piece of stiff piano wire.Push it tightly along the wire as you go, then slide it off when you have the desired length. You can leave it tightly coiled, paint over it and make it look like an oxygen hose or wiring conduit, or you can pull it out of the coil for a microphone cord in an aircraft. Lots of options. The too trial add-on systems I put in the interior are a halogen fire suppression system--Halogen still approved for military, computer, and other delicate system uses. The green bottles are oxygen of course. That system is a new cabin Oxygen purge system that will be tested and if approved, stowed differently from the current placement. These two systems can be activated independently or set to work in tandem to extinguish a cabin fire, then purge the halogen and restore breathable air. This is the back piece of the cabin behind the seats--it has a tiny area of "detail". I popped a piece of decal from an aircraft kit over it but....its sorely dull, Greeblies from stretched sprue to the rescue as well as some PE scraps and punched sheet, etc. Looks much better IMHO. I forgot to mention that some old decal stencils add a bit of color and detail also. Its easy to use all kinds of sections of color and print from old sheets. I never throw leftover decals away either--no matter if they are good, bad, or ugly. The cabin back piece looks okay painted up. You can also see hoses from the O2 bottles winding down the side of each seat, tucked out of the way for testing. The silver is actually solder wrapped around a piece of piano wire and glued in place with CA glue. When glued in place the back panel will be leaning slightly forward behind and above the seats. With the "canopy" open the added detail will be nice. Just another shot of the cabin parts as well as the inside surface of the canopy. I am thinking about possibly changing the canopy detail? The two photos above show a bad misfit of the dash over the IP and an uneven join on the passenger side of he cabin. I carved away various parts slowly and carefully but found out I would have to really slice down a bigger part of the IP to get the fit I was sure I needed---but wait, lets check something. I took the cabin and installed it inside the body shell, then I placed the canopy on the body--No problem! YAY. Oddly enough, I had the exact type misfit on the 1966 BAtmobile kit--same parts, same location etc. Odd that the engineering would be that similar? The Jet turbine engine may be the most disappointing detail. Horrible seams lengthwise across all the detail. the "spinner" up front was distorted and I am still thinking about cutting it off and making one myself. There is a nice side detail piece but trust me when I say that I will be doing lots more scratch work on it. I want it to be a focal point. supposedly you can slide the engine out on the "rail" that you can see under the engine, but when assembled with the 'nose' of the body in place, that turbine would NOT slide through the opening. No worries, I got two ideas about that hurdle. The underside of the chassis is beautiful. I saw a video of it all painted with various metallic colors and it looked fantastic. If I can find a still picture of that paint job I will post it. The side piece needs some more detail also. It will happen. The detail panel lines above the side plate are supposed to be the hood [bonnet] release part of the body [???] but I never found any drawings, model builds, or movie stills that show the front of the vehicle raised. I am guessing it would look similar to a dragster body that raises up to allow work on the components around the turbine? To build that interior with the turbine duct work and plumbing, wiring, etc., etc., would be mind blowing, but not in the cards for this project. Perhaps in the future??? Another kit? I will open these vents in the front fenders and back them with proper gauge mesh, I will also be backing the air intake over the cabin and canopy as well the large side intakes as well. Real metal mesh just looks too good IMHO. See the molding seam in front of the vents? there is also one over the real wheel wells. easy to take care of. The machine guns are pretty bare of detail also. Seriously thinking about getting some PE muzzles and building a pair replete with ammo belts and detail in the gun nests. Well, a couple of more mock up images to grow some MOJO and that is all for now. WHOOPS, almost forgot one more detail that needed some work--the computer modules that rise up out of the body in front of the canopy. Clunky--very clunky.there are two modules, each made of two pieces that sandwich together, then you glue a "copy" of the vents on top of each module. Problem is, and I have not exactly solved it yet, the "feet" for the modules do not cover the whole vent area on each side, so it looks odd [well, it looks odd to ME]. as if the modules rise up with the vents on top of them, but you can still see portions of the outer parts of the vents on the body. The "feet" of the models needed to be shaped differently. Options? replace the feet on the bottom of the modules [that section is very curvy in two directions at once, or carve out the vents on the body and show the modules actually coming through the body--oh boy......Well, I got a bit ahead of myself. When you glue the two pieces of each module together, there is a "V" shaped gap on each end. Maybe they meant it to be that way, but I'm not liking it. I glued in some sheet stryene, cut it down to shape, then sanded it into final form and painted it. Here is the beast ! Did not received yet. Was backordered and have to wait 2 or 3 weeks. Here are some pictures of the turbo engine I was talking about. Here is the description on Wikipedia The Honeywell AGT1500 is a gas turbine engine. It is the main powerplant of the M1 Abrams series of tanks. The engine was originally designed and produced by the Lycoming Turbine Engine Division in the Stratford Army Engine Plant. In 1995, production was moved to the Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama, after the Stratford Army Engine Plant was shut down.^[1] Engine output peaks at 1,500 hp (1,120 kW), with 2,750 lb-ft (3,754 N-m) of torque at that peak,^[2] which occurs at 3,000 rpm.^[3] This is output after a 10:1 reduction gearset in the engine assembly.^[4] Maximum torque of 3,950 lb-ft (5,355 N-m) is reached at 1,000 rpm.^[5] The engine can use a variety of fuels, including jet fuel, gasoline, diesel and Marine Diesel.^[2] In the early 1970s, the AGT1500 was developed into the PLT27, a flight-weight turboshaft for use in helicopters. Look at your Batmobile pictures. Oh my gosh you made a lot of scratch build. Very impressive. I also like modify my kits. That's why armour is so interresting to me. You can either make them very clean or at the opposite, make them look in a very bad condition. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful project Ted. Hi Ted, I was really impressed by the picures of the Abrams Turbo Engine I found on Google and sended you a few minutes ago. So made a quick search using the name that figures on the bottom of these pictures (Colin Adair). In fact these pictures were published in ArtStation. I never heard of this before. In fact ArtStation is a internet platform for all kind of artists. I was very curious and signed in to have a look .... OH WHAOUW.... this is so interresting... a ton of beautiful pictures and realisations.
