I was aware of the Japanese WWII primer known as Aotake after watching Bobby's A6M build video, and knew it was a sort of transparent coating applied directly over the airframe structure.  Since I’m currently building the Tamiya J2M Raiden I needed to use Vallejo Air’s Aotake paint, but when I did it seemed too bright, too garish to be accurate, so I just did some research, and found this fascinating article.

Not only is the Vallejo paint true, but just about any shade of blue or green would suffice, but what really got my attention was that Aotake was streets ahead of any primer the allies used, far superior to the U.S. zinc-chromate green we are more familiar with.

This article is a must-read for anyone building, or contemplating building a WWII Japanese subject.
